This site is s very new venture for us, for years we have had a
site that was all just linear without a shopping cart, or any of the bells and whistles of today, so, since about May of 2009, we have embarked into trying to put our collection here. So far, I think we managed to get about 25% on here, we are adding things every day, so come back often. And PLEASE email or phone us if you are having navigation problems, if you think something can be improved or changed to make your life easier. One thing I can tell you is that this has been quite a daunting experience, we are DEFINITELY much better doll house builders ( check some of our custom work in the gallery - on the banner of our site - once there click on the gray buttons above the pictures ) then website designers!
I am Maria Fowler and together with my husband John, we are the owners. The store was established in 1975, and all the dollhouses at that time were made on the premises in a tiny space on Mount Pleasant in Toronto, Ontario Canada. In fact, it was so tiny that Will Jameson, the gentleman who owned this shop before us, was building doll houses right in the front window.
In spring of 2001 when I had two young children and a unique handcrafted cloth toy business for which I was planning to open a small storefront, I wondered up and down Mount Pleasant looking for space - when I saw a sign - "Business for Sale", I walked in and that was that! A lot of our new customers walk into the shop for the first time and are unable to walk away without a dollhouse. Well I walked away with the whole business - IMAGINE ME COMING HOME WITH THAT BILL :)
My lovely husband John, once he recovered from the shock, was going to help me out just a bit building things. But within 2 month he said good bye to his partners in a computer repair business, and has been a volunteer - as he likes to say, in our store.
In 2003, bursting at the seams with a burgeoning collection, (that wee front window was just not big enough for the two of us!) we took an opportunity to move directly across the street to our current location.
Three thousand square feet of the place are dedicated to the shop, and another fifteen hundred to the workshop and shipping. There John rules the coup, and delights in showing off. :o) He likes to say that since he came from the electronics and computer business ( He used to be an Engineer at Apple for 20 years ) - guess quickly what computer I am writing this on? ) that dollhouse scale is actually large scale to him!! A basement the same size completes the picture, and down there is where we keep all our extra stock. We keep good inventories on all items that we sell, except the artisan pieces, of those we just have one or two of. Normally we keep about 200 various dollhouse kits down there.
in the workshop John, Andrew, Rob and Jim build and customize houses to order as well as build-up the dollhouse kits that we sell. They've built quite a few over the years, and are really familiar with the difficulty levels of each house and manufacturer, If you are not sure what house is right for the time you have available, or your experience or handyness level - they will be able to help! Or if there are any questions of course.
In the front of the shop we have Peggy, Catherine and Susan. All of them have been with us a long time, are experts in all that we stock, so you can pic their brains anytime.
In 2006 John and I started showing at international dollhouse shows to show off our growing collection of Canadian and International handmade artisan pieces which we'll be adding to the site in the future. Call and ask us about such artisans as Don Henry, John Ottewill, Judith Blondell, Debi Kolenchuk, CIMTA artisans, Karl Blindheim and many others from around the world.
Mention your favourites and I bet we know who they are and might even stock them
We truly are the one stop shop for all your dollhouse and miniature needs.
